That lortane is very blind aud foolish in the distribution of her gifts there can be no doabt, and no better proof of thiscoald be found, so every one said, than in the per son oC Constance Eider. Was it not enough that she was an ac knowledged beauty and possessed the most charming manners T Why, then, should stfe have been blest with the additional advan tage of an immense forune, when so many plain girls were portion less T As she stands now before her mirror she is certainly a beau tiful picture, save for an unmis takable look of care on her fair face. "Jack will soon be here," she think8, "how will he meet me; will he reproach ma and call me worldly T Well, I suppose I am worldly. Oh, if I only could forget him." Jack Vanderlyn had been Oon stance's friend and unavowed lover ever since she can remember, he bad been her boyish sweetheart bat as she advanced toward wofi-rffri-hood misfortune overtook his father and Jack was too proud to engage the heiress until his position in the world was improved. One year ago he had taken his leave for Mexico, promising that he would be with her the next Christmas eve. They bad parted in the presence of her mother, bnt chance gave them one moment alone; and in that their lips met and a look of un spoken love had passed between them. Tidings had come that Jack was rapidly burlding op the fortunes of his house, and though ttaer had been no communication between them Constance does not questian Jack'js faith ; bnt still she listens tremblingly for the 'Bound of wheels which will herald his ap proach. At last it is heard, and glancing furitively out of the win dow, Bhe sees again the handsome face and form which have been so long enshrined in her heart of hearts. Mrs. Eider met her expected guest and drew him into her private room. If she could have prevented his coming she wonld have gladly done so, bat Jack had been a Christmas visitor for so many years that to refuse his visit wonld have been to admit he was of more im portance than was desirable under the circumstances. "And Constance!" be demanded, wondering at her absence. "My dear boy, Constance pre ferred that you should hear from me of her engagemen t." "Her engagement !" "Ves, my dear Jack," Mrs. Eider went on, turning her gaze steadily upon the snowy world without, "to tha Hon. Algernon Fitzurge, of England. There was a brief pause, and then Jack recovered his voice. "Mrs. Eider, I would have spoken long ago, but my position was un certain. Now I can ask for Con stance without incurring the slur of being a fortune-hunter. I love her, I have loved her all of my life, and I won't give her up without a struggle." "My dear boy, do be cairn. Now, don't let us have anything to mar our pleasant Christmas, and don't to try to disturb Constance." "Let me see her, and hear from, her own lips that she prefers I his man, and l will go." "Yes, you shall see her." "Alone, and now T" "Yes, if yon will promise to be cilm and polite to Mr. Fitzurge, who is with us, and spend Christ mas Day." "I promise, and if find Constance has chosen the better man I will not utter one word. Perhaps I had better see him first." Mrs. Eider departed to give Con stance the particulars of the inter view, but it was not until both her guests were in the drawing joom that Constance descended. She greeXed Jack calmly, but success fully avoided his efforts to meet her eyes. It had been the custom with the Riders always to spend their Christmas at their home on the Iludson, and since Mrs. Eider became a window, she still followed the old fashion. A month before they had made the acquaintance of their tilted guest, who succeeded in impressing both mother and daughter so favorably that he pro cared an invitation for Christmas, and had been already installed two or three days with them when Jack arrived. The two men stared at each other and felt mutually antagonistic. The Honorable Algernon, however, did not play the lover to any pro voking extent, and r.iter dinner Jack had the interview be sought, the result of which he felt sure that ihe foolish women had been dazzled by tho thought of an alliance with a noble English family, and Con stance loved him still. That they knew nothing of the man or his antecedents was clear, and Jack at once devoted himself to cultivating the acquaintance of his fellow gcesr, with the view of learning something of his past history. "Not even my bride, the fair ("on stance T" "Dare to call her name and I'd strangle you 1" "You are a choleric m in, Mr. Vandeily. The course will be clear to you now, so I suppose I mit wish you a happy Christmas.'' He had left the house before either of the ladies were aware of what had taken place, ami then Jack told his story. Constance was overcome with humiliation, though not for the loss of a sop posed lover, for vanity and ambi tion, and not love, had led her astray. Knowing this, Jack was very ready to draw a veil over the whole atLiir. They sat up far into tbe night. Indeed, Mrs. Eider hail nodded repeatedly, and when Con st mce awoke next morniDg to the music of Christmas bells, it was with a lighter heart than she had known for some time. And so may the glad Christmas bells in other homes as well as hers, "Ring out the false, ring iu the true." I5e Happy To-il.iy. The intensity of modern life and the deepening of conscioasuess through intelligence breed sadness. We think too much and woik too hard to have time for enjoyment, and if we suddenly discover that we have need of it, we take it in inordinate quantities, rather than in simple aud natural ways; we go out and cuy pleasure at so much the hour instead of somehow con triving to live a mirthlul life. Close observers of modern society, like Walter Besant, have dis covered that a main lack in the lives of the poor is that of cheer, and he urges that philanthropic plans should embrace measures lor daily brightening the lives of the people by some simple experience of a pleasurable sort. It wonld be a somber fact if tho number of those who live through a day with out a laugh or even a smile could be ascertained, a strange miscar riage of Nature, since man is the only being within her dominion who is capable of that action. Christmas has rendered the world this good seivice, that now lor many centuries it has c-illed men to sympathetic cheerfulness. It comes, indeed, but once a year, but for some days the cloud on the brow of humanity litts a little and the wail diosoutofits voice. At times it has been too obstreperous in it mirth and called for puritanic check, but for th most tr has been true to its origin aud stirred the human heart to s mpathetic glad ness and hope. We shall soou bear the growls ot the pessimistic critic over th wastefulness of Christmas gifts and tbe irrationality of Christmas mirth. Heed him noi: he does not know that the key note of the uni verse is joy, and that Christmas laughter is only a stray echo of an eternal hymn, and nearly the only one that has reached ns, aud that it is well worthy of being caught if we would ever hear the whole. Therefore, fathers, give gifts to your children, even ifou have to lessen the daily portion, remember ing the wisdoui of Mahomet, who said, that i f "he hud two loaves of bread he would sell one and buy hyacinth, lor they would feed Ins soul." And, ye children, stir up your fathers to mirth: Christmas comes bnt once a vear, and the 1 yearsleft to them may not be many Century. TIIK NEW DISCOVERY.
